Now aged 7, Yanna was born from a free union between Véra the rebel and Zak the stranger, two lonely souls who passion brought together by chance in their bohemian life. An old cabin with a leaky roof serves as their home, somewhere at the end of a country row in the Eastern Townships. But in this Quebec of the late 1960s, freedom is not well regarded, especially from the teacher at the neighboring school who demands to see the little girl in his class from the start of the school year. Zak categorically refuses, only wanting a free education for his daughter, far from state-controlled brainwashing.
Things get complicated, however, when Véra receives her parents for her birthday. At odds with her mother who has never come to terms with her life choices, she finds very little comfort in her father, walled in silence. No longer able to stand it, Zak leaves to join his family in Toronto. He leaves Véra alone to face maternal reprimands. Faced with this world of adults behaving strangely, the little girl observes and reports on the tragic events that will soon occur.
